Journey into Mystery #78 in CGC 7.5. Kirby Ditko Lee pre-Hero Marvel. Many consider this to be a Dr. Strange prototype as the cover and a story detail the "Sorcerer". Strange's actual 1st appearance was just 16-months later in Strange Tales #110.
Pre-Hero marvels are quite undervalued relative to the blockbuster superheroes that Kirby and Lee created within the next year or two. Only 14 copies graded higher on the CGC census, however while holding the book, the front cover appears to me on par with most of my 9.0s. As such I won't let it go for the 7.5 CGC grade.
Not exactly sure what has knocked this down to a 7.5 with crisp corners and fresh staples, but if you are serious about the book, perhaps order the CGC notes to find out. I suspect it could be a 1/2 inch to 1 inch cover tear on the rear of the book (which I've highlighted), but it's very hard to determine for sure while the book is in the case. Might just be a wrinkle.
Whatever the defect is knocking it down to a 7.5, this is probably the nicest looking copy of this book I will ever be able to hold. Marvel stamp and issue number complete and not cut off like many books of this vintage. Please request a consolidated invoice before paying.
